Software, websites and webshops have to be fast!
It used to be that the name of the gaming IT development was to write code that reused existing source code. The idea is that by reusing source code over and over again companies can save a lot of money. In theory the idea is good because you write a module and you use this module over and over again in all your projects. In practice however this is difficult to implement because it requires not only planning but also that the people working with the modules understand exactly how they work. My experience is that by the time the modules a finished and everyone understands and they are either obsolete or the developers change work
. Instead of developing modules go out and buy a finished modules from reputable companies. 9/10 times they are a lot better than what you yourself can develop, they cost a fraction and you don’t have to spend valuable project time developing and testing these modules.
I know I’m exaggerating, I just want to prove a point.
Speed is the name of the game!
Instead of developing modules and doing everything yourself, spend your time making your website/web shop faster. People are impatient, if your website/web shop does not load fast enough they go somewhere else and you lose a potential customer or a sale.
Below you see a list of things that you can think about, you may be inspired
- Make sure you have a top-notch software developer/web development company working for you. If the people doing your website/webshop do not know what they’re dealing with they will never gets it work and remember that quality cost money.
- Lessen the number of plug-ins you have on your page. For instance you may have Facebook, Twitter, Google plus, Delicious etc. Each time a plug-in is loading is slow down the page. Make sure that you only have the plug-ins you actually need.
- Remove all unnecessary JavaScript from you pages. note: you have to be careful when you do this because by removing JavaScript you may have problems installing plug-ins in the future because the problem will need a certain JavaScript function which may have been removed. Again use a good software developer/web development company who knows what they are dealing with.
- Limit the number of images/graphic you have in your page. More graphic you have the heavier the page will be.
- Lessen the usage of flash. If you can make sure that all the images uploaded the correct size, that way the server will not need to resize the images on the fly.
- Make sure that your server is fast. If you’re hosting on a shared server with 200 websites, then none of the above will help you. Your server has to be fast.
- Make sure you’re using a professional hosting company who knows the deal. At 1902 we many times see the problems being the hosting company rather than the source code. This is especially true for Magento development.
- Lessen your requirements, Rome was not built in one day neither was your website/web shop. Don’t do everything in one go you will never gets finished and you may end up losing all your money
